Why are women so much better-looking than men?

Most heterosexual men find most women at least slightly attractive, yet most heterosexual women find most men at least slightly unattractive. Is this because men don't make the effort? If not, how can this possibly make sense? We're supposed to be able to reproduce ourselves, aren't we? Wouldn't it make more sense for us to fancy each other?
