Tsunami in Japan. Queue the "God's wrath and punishment" rants.?

What I don't get is this: If religious folk reckon that it's 'God's Wrath', which He is clearly aiming to kill as many people as possible (All loving!?), why do they pray for the people he didn't kill? He tried to kill them, why does He care for prayers sent for them?
