Do you prefer acoustic or electric acoustic?

I am a slightly experienced guitar player and am interested in buying a new one. I am confused on whether I want an acoustic guitar or electric acoustic guitar. They are relatively the same, but the electric acoustic can be plugged into an amplifier. Am I correct? With my guitar, I would be playing reggae, classic rock, alternative, folk; if that makes a difference.
